Just like kenaf, jute, nettle, ramie and hemp - flax is a bast fiber. One of the oldest fibers used in Western civilization as the common flax plant was one of the first domesticated crops. Early Egyptian mummies were wrapped in linen fabric. Historically located in Western Europe, flax production today is centered in Russia, Poland and France.
Easy to spin; no need for a distaff.

"This flax top is absolutely beautiful - fiber is long, white and surprisingly soft."
"It’s lovely and I just can’t wait to see how it spins up!!!"
"This is really nice for learning how to spin flax. My spinning instructor gave it her seal of approval and I have been working with it in class. It's much nicer than other flaxes I've spun with. I've been so successful with it on the wheel that I'm going to try spinning it on the supported spindle next."
"I'm just learning to spin flax and started with a strick. That was harder than I could manage so I got this to get the feel of the fiber before moving back to the full length stuff. I found I love spinning it on the fold and it's nice not to have to deal with the distaff, so I wonder if I will ever get back to my strick."
"This product is excellent! It is so easy to spin. I fully recommend it."
"Love it"
"Get product. Planning on buying more. This is just 250g of the 1000g that I purchased."
"Simply lovely fiber. Lightweight and fine, it's a delight to work with. I had to fish out the high-speed whorl for it."
