Weaving

Weaving is an ancient craft that creates items that are both practical and beautiful.  It covers a large scope of items and techniques from a simple towel, to a sturdy rug, to a formal dress, to a stunning tapestry piece as lifelike as any painting.  If you've ever been interested in weaving there is a type that will work for your budget and space.

Tapestry is the simplest form of weaving, requiring only a frame, yarn, and a few simple tools to create a woven piece.  The items can be practical, like a drink coaster, or a piece of art like a wall hanging, or even both at the same time.  It's a great place to start if you have a limited space, smaller budget, or unsure if you want to commit to a larger expense before trying it out.  Keep in mind that it is also the slowest of the weaving types, but with some patience and practice you'll get the hang of it quickly.

Smaller looms like pin looms, inkle looms, band looms, triangle looms, and similar are all mainly single purpose looms.  Most are on the less expensive side, though there are some exceptions, and don't require much in the way of additional tools. Inkle and band looms make woven bands such as ribbon, pet leashes, belts, carry straps.  Pin looms come in a shape from squares, triangles, and the occasional hexagon or other multi-sided shape.  Most of the time these shapes are sewn together to make another item, like a stuffed animal.  The larger triangle looms are used to make shawls and don't require piecing items together.

Rigid heddle looms and multi harness looms all allow for the creation of lengths of cloth from simple, single color cloth all the way to more complex jacquard patterns.  These types of looms are what most people think of when they picture the products weaving makes, but they are only one part of the larger weaving world.  These looms are the most versatile, often being able to substitute other types of looms with a bit of creative thinking. They come in a wide range of options allow a would be weaver to pick a loom that fits their space and budget.
