The Woolery now offers a new line of hemp yarn from Bluegrass Mills! Select from fifteen colors.
Hemp fiber obtained from the bast of the Cannabis sativa plant has been used for some 10,000 years for items such as clothing, rope, paper, sailcloth, everything from clothing and other household goods. The use of hemp cord in pottery has been documented in modern day Taiwan dating back to 8,000 B.C. Hemp belongs to the bast fiber family that also includes flax, jute, ramie, nettle and kenaf. All bast fibers will be a bit stiff at first, but become progressively softer after only 3-4 washings.
Hemp is environmentally friendly in many ways. Hemp grows well without the need for chemicals which makes it an ideal alternative to cotton. In addition, hemp has a deep root system that helps to prevent soil erosion and aerates the soil to the benefit of future crops. Hemp is an extremely eco-friendly resource.
Bluegrass Mills Hemp Yarn is derived from line fiber from the highest quality European fair trade hemp. This hemp is processed in the traditional manner of water retting, breaking, scutching and hackling which produces the high quality long fiber. This is not "cottonized" hemp fiber produced by harsh chemical treatment. Buy hemp yarn for sale today!
