One of the oldest fibers used in Western civilization as the common flax plant (Linum usitatissimum) was one of the first domesticated crops. Early Egyptian mummies were wrapped in linen fabric. Flax is 2-3x stronger than cotton fiber, but not as elastic.

Historically located in Western Europe, flax production today is centered in Russia, Poland and France.
