Dyeing Project Kits
Dyeing Project Kits
The Woolery offers a wide range of dying kits to suit your needs! A kit is a great way to learn about the colorful world of dying your own yarn, fiber, or cloth to make your project match your vision perfectly. We have kits for dying with chemical or natural dyes. Each type of dying has their pros and cons and you’ll need to know those to pick what is best for you.
Natural dying is an art form as much as it is a science. It’s difficult at best to use natural dyes to recreate the same color more than once. This is due to the variable nature of plants which are the base of these dyes. Potency depends on growing conditions for the year as well as when and how the plant is harvested. Natural dyes are not as lightfast or wash fast as chemical dyes, particularly if you want to avoid mordents that can be detrimental to work with such as heavy metals. With that in mind, if you want to explore the world of color that nature has to offer Natural dying is a fantastic way to do so. It’s a fun way to experiment with color and dyestuffs in a way that you can with chemical dyes.
The chemical dye kits we offer are all acid dyes, that means that the kits work with an acid along with heat for the dye to adhere to the material you are dying. Acid dyes work best with animal/protein fibers. They do not work with plant/cellulose fibers, so keep what you want to dye in mind when picking a kit! Acid dyes are easy to use and with an accurate scale it’s easy to reproduce the same color more than once. As long as the dye is processed correctly they are decently color and light fast. Though some colors are prone to bleeding, reds, purples, and some blues are particularly known for that. We recommend using dye catchers when washing any newly made item for the first couple of times to catch any dye bleed off that may occur. You can find dye catchers in the laundry aisle at your local grocery store.
