Safari Scarf - Rigid Heddle Weaving Pattern

Safari Scarf - Rigid Heddle Weaving Pattern

Elizabeth

Are you ready to go wild? This rigid heddle weaving project uses Alexandra Safari Collection hand-dyed yarn and is perfect for beginners. Let the yarn do the work for you to create something simple, but STUNNING.

Equipment Needed

- Rigid Heddle loom, at least 13” weaving width

- 12.5 dent reed (If you're using a 12 dent heddle, your scarf will be slightly wider, so plan your weaving width accordingly)

- Shuttle - either boat or stick

- Fringe twister

Yarns

Warp: Alexandra Safari Collection Yarn, Green Toad ~ 1 skein, 437 yards

Weft: Fyberspates CoopKnits Socks Yeah! Yarn, Topaz ~ 1 - 2 skeins depending on how long you want your scarf. We used 1 full skein and a small amount of a second.

Setts

Warp: 12.5 epi (147 ends total - Our ends are odd to have both selvedge threads in a hole)

Weft: ~ 12 -13 ppi

Dimensions (approximate)

Width in reed: 11.75”

Woven length: ~ 74”

Finished size (after wet finishing): ~ 10.75” x 70 (not including 6" of fringe on either side)

Weave Structure

Plain weave

Warp

We created a 100” long warp with 147 ends using Alexandra Safari - Green Toad

Project Steps

  • Warp your loom using your desired method with a length of 100" and 147 ends using Alexandra Safari.
  • Wind a shuttle (we used a boat shuttle and bobbin) with CoopKnits Socks Yeah!. Allowing around 6" for fringe, spread your warp with scrap yarn, and weave your scarf to your desired length. We wove ours to around 73".
  • Remove the scarf from the loom, leaving about 6" of unwoven warp on either side.
  • Our fringe was made by twisting bundles of 2 working ends together in each clip of our fringe twister, then letting them twist together to create twisted bundles of 4 total working ends. If you’ve never used a tool to twist fringe, check out this helpful video:
