Raw Wool Fleece by the Pound — Unwashed Fleece for Hand Spinning, Felting & Natural Dyeing

Raw fleece is whole or skirted sheep's wool sold in its natural, unwashed state directly after shearing. It is the starting point for hand spinners, fiber artists, and natural dyers who prefer to wash, prepare, and process their own fiber from scratch. All fleeces at The Woolery are skirted (heavily soiled edge wool removed) and selected for cleanliness, softness, and staple length. Raw fleece is sold by the pound and available while supplies last.

Raw vs. washed fleece:
All fleeces in this collection are unwashed unless otherwise noted. Raw fleece contains lanolin (natural wool grease), vegetable matter, and dirt from the animal's environment. Washing (scouring) before spinning or felting is required for most uses. → How to wash and prepare raw fleece

Selecting a fleece:
When choosing a raw fleece, the key variables are breed (determines softness, staple length, and luster), cleanliness (amount of vegetable matter and lanolin), and staple length (affects spinning method — short staple for woolen, long staple for worsted).

Breeds carried — fleece comparison:
  • Blue Face Leicester: nice and clean.
  • Border Leicester: easy to spin, nice luster.
  • Cormo: soft and fluffy, easy to spin and felt.
  • Corriedale: nice, popular medium soft wool.
  • Merino: whiter and softer but requires more preparation.
  • Romney: white or colored, easy to spin, good for beginners.
