Lustrous and beautiful, New Zealand Bluefaced Leicester is a versatile workhorse of a fiber. It felts readily and firmly, and makes for hard-wearing slippers and mats, as well as sculptures and tapestries. At 36 microns it is best suited to outerwear, and will make a coat that will wear well for years.
It drafts readily and easily, and is a great fiber for beginning spinners because of its length and easy drafting. Experienced spinners will appreciate it as well for the lively colors that it is dyed in and its friendly price.
This BFL is New Zealand-bred, and differs from the North American and European BFL. The NZ-bred is an unimproved breed, and not as fine as the modern BFL. It retains the coarser wool of the older English Leicester without the fine-wool genetics that have been crossed into some modern BFL strains.
Rosie (Rose Will Monroe ) was originally from Kentucky. She worked as a riveter at a Aircraft Factory during WWII. Later in life, Rosie realized her dream of flying when she became a pilot. You can realize your fiber ambitions with Rosie’s Fiber BFL - You Can Do It!
