Our product review series continues with the Ashford Rigid Heddle Loom. Erika gives us her thoughts on it below.

How product or yarn are you reviewing?

Ashford Rigid Heddle Loom 24"

How did you use this product?

The most recent project I made was a scarf.

What do you like about this product?

In my opinion, for the price you pay and the value you get for the product is excellent. I personally like the design of the handles so that yarn doesn't catch on it when you are weaving, like it can on other handle designs. I also prefer the material that the heddles are made out of over the other "plastics" that are used in other manufacturers. I also love the optional accessories that you can purchase. For example, the freedom roller allows you to put longer or thicker warps on it and the table stand that allow it to be set up for use as a tapestry loom. Plus there are 2 extra dent sizes (a 2.5 dent & a 15 dent) that aren't available through other manufacturers. These extra options set it apart from other manufacturers.

What was challenging about this product? What might someone need to consider when using?

I wouldn't consider it a challenge per say but, since this item comes with unfinished wood, you will want to purchase something to finish it. You can use a wax, paint, or clear coat that will protect it from moisture/dryness, the oil in your hands, dirt, or anything else that can come in contact with your loom or accidentally spill on it. Plus it makes the loom look nicer! The only other thing to consider is that Ashford has a 7.5 dent & 12.5 dent heddle instead of the "regular" 8 and 12 dent. While this only minorly affects things, it is still worth noting so you can adjust your math as needed.

What types of projects would this product be good for?

This is a very versatile size in my opinion. You can make scarves, shawls, table runners, placemats, napkins, towels, or anything up to a 24" width (not accounting for draw in & shrinkage) without having to use 2 heddles.

Who would this product be good for?

I purchased this as my first rigid heddle and did not have any weaving experience so I would recommend this to beginners. However, it is also great for more experienced weavers since it is so versatile.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

While the brand of rigid heddle you purchase is always a personal preference, I highly recommend this one for lots of the reasons I already listed. Plus, I can confidently say that I have not been disappointed since purchasing it 2 years ago.
