Traditional Book Charkha

Charkhas are the perfect wheel to use for spinning fibers with short staple lengths such as cottonsilkangora or any fine fiber.

Imported from India this is the authentic "Gandhi" Charkha Wheel. You might recall Ben Kingsley in the movie spinning on one of these. Hand-crafted in teak by an Indian firm for domestic users (yes, they are still used today), the most popular size is the book Charkha.

Order this traditional book Charkha spinning wheel today!

Features:

  • Closed Size: 2" x 9.75" x 6.5"
  • 3 Spindles
  • Cotton Drive Band
  • Skeiner
  • Ratio: 100:1

Everything folds up into a case that has the contours of a hardback book. Ideal for spinning short staple fibers such as cotton or lamb's fine wool into fine yarns. Also good for silk, angora, cashmere, dog hair, or any fine fiber.

Note: this product is a true charkha wheel handmade in India. As such, each wheel will have slight cosmetic differences. While these charkhas are made of teak and carefully finished (unlike many charkhas we have seen coming out of India), they cannot be expected to have the same fine finish an American spinner is used to seeing in western wheels. It is just the nature of the product as made and used in India. We hope you enjoy your charkha, a very efficient tool and a sure conversation piece!

Beautiful tool once the finish was gone

"I had this shipped to a relatives home so I could I it while recovering from surgery. It is a lovely tool but the finish was tacky, poorly applied and stunk. I spent a full day disassembling, stripping and cleaning it with acetone before I was satisfied and put it back together."

charkha wheel

"The price was reasonable, but I have had a hard time getting this to work. The thread cording that came with this did not fit the wheel and it came with two thin rubber bands that also would not give the wheel enough stability to spin. The wooden fold-down piece that the tahki spindle attaches to was shaped incorrectly so that the spindle pointed at an abrupt slant downward and not straight out for spinning. I am determined to get this working, but frustrated at incompatible parts that do not seem to work well."

Cute and functional

"I debated hard between this and the deluxe. This one is in perfect working order, so the risk worked out for me. Also, spinning cotton is tricky af, so get ready for a whole new challenge if you're used to wool (though I have spun a little wool on this too, which was fun and easy)"
