Nalbinding - What in the World Is That?

Author: Ulrike Claßen-Büttner

This is the black and white version of the book: Nalbinding - An Age-Old Technique Nalbinding was and is found around the world, but in most industrialized countries it is virtually unknown today. This was not always so. Only when knitting began to spread in the European Middle Ages, did nalbinding sink into oblivion there. Today, creative people are re-discovering nalbinding. If you are interested in how nalbinding developed, this book provides you with a historical overview based on the most important archaeological finds. If you are a textile artisan or scholar, you will find fascinating structures and diverse variations described and explained. And finally, if you have the courage to learn and revive an ancient handicraft, there are instructions for various stitches and practical projects.

Ulrike Claen-Buttner was born in 1973 at Lake Constance. After high school she trained as a pharmacy technician. Three years later, she fulfilled her childhood dream of studying archeology and geology at the University of Cologne. After her studies she lived in Bavaria for several years, where she produced her first book and exhibition, based on a tentative PhD thesis about prehistoric textile techniques. Nowadays, she lives with her family in North Rhine-Westphalia and works as author, freelance archaeologist, and textile artist.

good resource

"Has good information on historical basis of nalbinding and all the places in the world it shows up. Although I was a bit disappointed in the paper quality of the book itself."

I love this book!

"I tried learning nalbinding from video tutorials but there always seemed to be some step that I couldn't follow in them. This book helped me get over that hurdle right away. The illustrations clearly show each important step and there are instructions staggered for both beginners and more advanced needle binders. There is also a ton of information on the archaeological evidence and studies of the craft. I highly recommend this book if you are at all interested in learning more about nalbinding."

Learning an old craft

"Besides the history of Naalbinding this book offers a clear description of the process. Plan to try the patterns when I learn the method."

I bought this on a

"I bought this on a whim, having always vaguely wanted to try nalbinding sometime, and I'm very glad it did. It has a lot of detail about the history of nalbinding, which an excellent balance of academic and approachable, as well as well illustrated instructions for various stitches. It's not going to teach you everything about the practice of nalbinding, but it's an excellent place to get started, and the history half of the book will likely be of interest even if you already know the stitches."

Excellent Resource

"This is an excellent resource on Nalbinding. Well written and thought out. Lots of historical data and several stitches instead of just one or two. Even if you are not a Nalbinding fan it is a good read and worth your time. You would be happy to know it is not just an overpriced nothing. It is well priced and an excellent stash for your library. The only thing missing to make this the cats meow would be some sweater techniques like how to make collar yokes and stuff. That is not historical as far as currently known but is a modern project and would be extremely useful for sweater makers."
