The Woolery now offers a new line of hemp yarn from Bluegrass Mills!  Select from fifteen colors.

Hemp fiber obtained from the bast of the Cannabis sativa plant has been used for some 10,000 years for items such as clothing, rope, paper, sailcloth, everything from clothing  and other household goods.  The use of hemp cord in pottery has been documented in modern day Taiwan dating back to 8,000 B.C.  Hemp belongs to the bast fiber family that also includes flax, jute, ramie, nettle and kenaf.  All bast fibers will be a bit stiff at first, but become progressively softer after only 3-4 washings.

Hemp is environmentally friendly in many ways. Hemp grows well without the need for chemicals which makes it an ideal alternative to cotton.  In addition, hemp has a deep root system that helps to prevent soil erosion and aerates the soil to the benefit of future crops. Hemp is an extremely eco-friendly resource.

Bluegrass Mills Hemp Yarn is derived from line fiber from the highest quality European fair trade hemp.  This hemp is processed in the traditional manner of water retting, breaking, scutching and hackling which produces the high quality long fiber.  This is not "cottonized" hemp fiber produced by harsh chemical treatment. The dyes used are Bluesign approved and meet both GOTS and OEKO-TEX Standard 100.

This is a European hemp

"This is a European hemp yarn that will have excellent strength and durability. The dyes used are safe for the environment. I would get the color card first before ordering as the website colors may not accurately convey the colors in person."

Happy to get this hemp

"I am really pleased that you carry hemp on cones for weaving! It is a super good fiber-- gets softer and softer with wear and wears like iron for long lasting items. I had a hard time deciding colors to choose so got neutrals this time but glad you have good colors for additional projects."

Nancy C. (5/5)

This is such interesting yarn.

"This is such interesting yarn. I use it for handwoven towels and people seem to love having an option for just cotton. We need more colors though!"

Great for historical tape looming

"I have found these hemp yarns lovely for working up on my tape loom for historical events and costuming."

Love Hemp

"Love Hemp yarn. Very nice quality. Lovely colors. The texture is great. I am planning on a number of weaving projects with this hemp. Can't wait to see the finished results. Thank you so much for carrying Hemp."

Peggy W. (5/5)

This is a textured yarn

"This is a textured yarn that has some weak spots at its thinnest points; it requires patience if used as a warp. Be prepared to mend out knots in the warp when finishing your fabric."

Sarah B. (5/5)

Be informed and use with caution.

"I really wanted to like this yarn, but that didn’t happen. It started at the warping board with way too many splices. I was winding a longish 9 yard warp, 291 ends and encountered 17 splices within 2 cones of white yarn and 4 splices in 1/4 cone of burgundy yarn. This makes it far too wasteful if you try to remove the splices from the warp, cutting out 1-8 yards per splice. Then while attempting to weave the Hemp Runner Challenge, came to quickly realize this is NOT the yarn to use for anything with fine detail, much too slubby. Nor is it the yarn to use at 24 epi, way too Grabby in the reed. Looks better suited for 15 epi in a reed that slays 1 per dent."

Bluegrass Mills Hemp Yarn

"Have not started a project with the yarn yet, but the colors are nice and I look forward to weaving it alone, and in combination with cottolin yarn for towels, for starters"

Kathy N. (5/5)

I received the hemp yarn

"I received the hemp yarn promptly and while I have never used hemp yarn before, it was what I expected. The colors are beautiful and I am planning to make guitar straps with it!"
