A Truly "Uneek" Scarf - Rigid Heddle project

This project on the rigid heddle loom was made with stash-busting in mind for those that might have extra Tencel lying around, but it’s also a great opportunity to make the most out of a new roll! Using Maurice Brassard Tencel 8/2 as the warp and Uneek Worsted Wool as weft, this scarf is more weft-facing due to how the warp blends into the Uneek’s overall color scheme. The effect allows the horizontal weft stripes to be on full display, while the Tencel warp provides excellent drape.

Amy came up with two projects to highlight the effect. One using a brighter colorway with Uneek Worsted Wool 4020 & Tencel in Vert fonce and another with a more muted, monochromatic look using Uneek 4006 & Tencel in Charcoal.

The cool thing about this project is that there are multiple Uneek colors that go with a single Tencel color to get this look! So if you have a spool of Tencel in Charcoal, you could use that with multiple Uneek colors in this line. One spool of Tencel is enough to make at least 4 scarves, so you can easily pair Uneek colorways with a single Tencel color to get a different scarf with the same effect.

We created a handy-dandy chart to help you get the most out of your Tencel or Uneek yarn! By cross-referencing every colorway in the Uneek Worsted Wool line with Tencel Colors, we determined which Tencel (if any) the Uneek would work with to duplicate this design. Simply identify the Uneek Color you’re wanting to pair with Tencel and look across to find a check mark! Or if you already have a Tencel, look for that color and then look down to find which Uneek yarns are marked! (**Remember this chart is for using the Tencel as warp and Uneek as weft**)

Here’s how to make yours!

Materials Needed

Loom, we used the Ashford Rigid Heddle loom but you can use any rigid heddle or multi harness loom with at least 16” weaving width
10 Dent Rigid Heddle or Reed
1 skein of Uneek Worsted Wool and 1 spool of Tencel 8/2 – we used Uneek in 4020 and Tencel in Vert fonce
Paper for warp separation
Scissors
Fringe twister

Pattern: Plain Weave

We wrote this pattern up for a Rigid Heddle Loom but you can also use a Table Loom! Check out our blog post, How to Create Plain Weave on a Multi Harness Loom if you need help setting up your treadles!

Warp

We created a 100” inch warp using approximately 278 yards Tencel 8/2 that was around 10.25 inches wide. The warp is solid, so no need to do anything extra!

Weft

When you work with a self striping yarn you need to make sure you are keeping your color sequencing in order in your weft. The same technique we use in our Watercolor Scarf Project will work perfectly for keeping your stripes in order! We have a full YouTube Video for this technique here:

Once you have your color management all planned out you can weave away! Our scarf's EPI (ends per inch) is 10, because we're using the 10 Dent Rigid Heddle. Our PPI (picks per inch) was 9 and we used the whole skein of Uneek to get 80 woven inches.

Finishing

We left about 6” of warp unwoven on both ends to create fringe. Our fringe was made by twisting bundles of 2 working ends together in each clip of our fringe twister, then letting them twist together to create twisted bundles of 4 total working ends.
