This swift can be used instead of an umbrella swift, when you need to unwind a skein of yarn, either onto a warping board for weavers, or into a ball for knitters and crocheters.

The wonderful thing about a squirrel cage swift is that it is very smooth and easy on yarn, holds it tense enough to unwind, but not so tense that it will break.

This style of swift is suitable for any type of yarn. However, is particularly good for delicate yarn as you can set it for light tension on the yarn.

Wonderful tool, should have a better finish

"The swift can hold both holds very large and very skinny skeins of any length. It is very smooth and easy to work. With delicate yarns you can reduce the tension. I have had many other kinds of swifts including upright ones, umbrella, and. Amish style. The squirrel is by far my favorite. The only reason I have it only 4 stars is because it is not nicely finished. Some of the wood isn’t sanded and there is no wax or oil finish on any of it. For this much money the wood should have been nicely finished. Dine yarns have caught on the rougher spots."

Sturdy, well made, reliable

"Umbrella swifts do the job adequately but this swift doesn't have to be clamped somewhere. It's always ready, doesn't fall over, and can be easily moved around. If I had the space, I wouldn't mind having two of these swifts so I could have even more skeins ready to wind bobbins from. Yes, you can have more than one skein mounted as long as the inactive skein's ends are secured. With my bobbin winder, I wind directly from the skein to the bobbin. No, the wood is not varnished - a characteristic of Scandinavian weaving equipment. No, that's not a problem. Apply hemp oil if you must."

Everything I had hoped for

"I love that I can pre-load multiple hanks onto the barrels and then wind them one after another. I have my ball winder mounted at the top with the ball core pointing toward me horizontally and that makes winding a breeze. It's super gentle on delicate yarns. If I could change one thing, it would be a method by which to better secure the metal shafts which the cages spin on because the spinning motion eventually moves them in one direction or the other and I have to pause to push them back in place before they slide out of the holes altogether."

I don't HATE it but I don't LOVE it

"I've had this a year and a half now. I have other swifts but do use this one exclusively. First, for the price it is not as well made as I would have expected. The wood is unfinished, and a little rough, especially the cages which hold the yarn! From a design standpoint, I wish I had researched more before purchasing. Other squirrel cage swifts have one side open which makes placing the yarn on it a lot easier. This requires some coordination to hold the cage, put the skein on, and then put the cage back in with the rod. It does tend to wind the cakes tighter than I like, but a second winding from the cake (always a good idea anyway) fixes the problem. One tip is to use bar soap on the metal rods and the holes they go through to help smooth out the noisy clacking ad vibrations. Since I paid a metric buttload for this I'm planning on sanding it, staining and shellacking my investment. All in all it does do a good job and I like the results better than using my Amish swift."
