What Customers Say

Rated 4.5 out of 5 — 4 verified reviews

A very versatile, medium handling wool ideal for hand-spinning that dyes very well.

The Southdown breed is the oldest of the "down" sheep. It originated from the native sheep of the region, which were improved beginning in the late 1700s and continuing through the 1830s.  The Southdown was probably imported to North America in the 1700s, though the first documented importation occurred in 1803, with sheep brought into New York and Massachusetts. Importations continued throughout the 1800s, though the breed did not become popular until after mid-century with the subsiding of the Merino craze.

The American Southdown Breeders Association was formed in 1882. The breed was highly regarded as a premier meat breed until the market shift to taller, larger sheep during the 1900s.

Today, it is about the 6th or 7th most popular breed in the United States, and its population has held steady during the past 20 years with over 5,000 lambs registered per year.

Easy Spin

"Was very quick to spin and gives a decent yarn. Not very soft, but softer than most conservation breeds, so definitely not for any next-to-skin use. Would do well as a cardigan or accessory. Definitely thinking about using it for a thicker shawl or scarf with the amount that I spun up. As I said, it is very easy to spin, giving me few slubs and kept nice an even with little effort."

Wonderful spin

"I bought this as a treat for spinning a big job for a lady. I just finished and it was a joy to spin"

Tammy K. (5/5)

great spinning fun

"I purchased southdown fiber to spin yarn for socks. It is felt resistant which is a good thing when it comes to socks! The fiber is lovely, well prepped and easy to spin. I gave 4 stars only because I spin woolen style and had to reprep it so I could do this. If you spin worsted it is perfectly prepared! Will buy again and highly recommend."
