Capture the majesty each national park offers with original beanie patterns created by knitting designer and outdoor enthusiast Nancy Bates.

Beanies range from simple beanie constructions to more challenging stitch patterns such as the two-color crossovers inspired by South Dakota’s Badlands or the multiple cable designs inspired by New Mexico’s Carlsbad Caverns. Clear charts, easy-to-read keys, and thorough instructions help any knitter, whether beginner or experienced, through these gratifying projects. Show your love and appreciation of our national parks with these beautiful and practical beanie projects you can wear any time or any place.

  • Every US National Park is celebrated with a unique beanie design, including the newly designated park New River Gorge in West Virginia.
  • Each pattern is accompanied by photos of the finished beanie and gorgeous images of the park’s landscapes that inspired it.

Knitting the National Parks

"I bought this for inspiration to my Christmas stocking knitting. . . I am oh so pleased! The creativity of the designers was beyond my expectation. . . how they took the visual into the knitting graph was truly exceptional. Can't wait to see how my stockings turn out now!"

Lovely book and patterns.

"I have knitted only one of the patterns so far. It turned out great! The pattern was well written and the colors used in the model well represented the colors of the Grand Canyon. I had a hard time choosing which hat to knit first, out of the 63 choices, but since I live in the ""Grand Canyon"" state, I thought that was the most appropriate. I plan to knit many more, maybe all of them eventually. You won't be disappointed if you buy this book."

Mixed feelings. . .

"The book is beautiful. The Katmai hat on the cover will be my first project and what inspired me to buy the book. Unfortunately, a lot of patterns are too abstract for my taste and disappointed me."

I’ve knitted two Zion hats

"I’ve knitted two Zion hats and two Katmai hats. Still newish to stranded knitting so learned a lot. Regarding the decreases in the Katmai hat, the nine stitches (in the center of the first decrease row) surprised me. I only discovered my error of assuming the after several rows. I understand the reason for the oddity but a heads up hint to pay attention it would help. First time I’d run across a grid that didn’t point it out. Otherwise, the hats turned out fun. I added beaded yarn for dew in the Zion hat, and replaced the brown branches (?—Looked like chocolate syrup to me) with blue for the sky. I look forward to knitting more hats from the book."

Gift

"I am not a knitter. I bought this for a gift for my sister."

Creative Fun!!

"Easy to follow patterns and yarn colors can be your choice (great stash buster). Love projects that look like you took a long time but knitted up quick and impressive. I did downsize my needles but I’m a loose crochet/ knitter."
