"This gave a very rich ochre hue. We used different mordants, and the colors ranged from dark maroon to ochre color."

Madder is a beautiful, permanent red dye from the roots of a pretty, vine-like, low growing herb that is extremely drought-resistant. It has been cultivated in Europe and the Middle East for at least 5,000 years. Similar wild varieties have been used by Native Americans and in the Far East. First quality ground roots make dyeing with this traditional dye easy. Steep the roots, add fiber and simmer at low temperatures to develop a dark red.

"This may just be my inexperience with dyeing, but the shades produced look much more orange. I’m not complaining, they’re lovely, but I am still trying to get that turkey red I’ve heard you can get from madder!"
