Fibre Facts

Author: Bette Hochberg

This is a basic guide for hand weavers. It tells how fibers behave, how they are formed into yarns, how to use them in weaving, and how to care for them.

Many weavers do not know enough about wool, cotton, silk, linen and other fibers. They do not know what behavior to expect from the fibers and yarns they use. Thus, they cannot confidently plan a project and predict the results.

Here are the facts which will give you a clear understanding of natural and synthetic fibers, their properties, and how they affect the quality and performance of weaving. There are detailed charts of exact strength, weight, elasticity, recommended temperatures, etc. for each fiber. It contains only information which will be truly useful to the average hand weaver. It will be helpful not only to weavers, but also to spinners, knitters and others who work with fibers. This book is not meant to be read from cover to cover. It is intended as a working reference.

This is the flrst time that much of this material has been presented in a book for hand weavers. Much of the technical data has appeared in texts on industrial weaving. In order to make it clearly understood by weavers with non-scientific backgrounds, the author uses everyday language rather than technical terminology whenever possible.

Good resource

"At a recent guild meeting a senior member gave a talk on the properties of fiber and recommended this book as a resource. The first sentence is "We will become better weavers if we understand our raw materials" and the rest of the book just provides the facts we would need to answer any question we might have when working with protein/cellulose/manufactured fibers. How strong is this fiber vs that fiber? What level of heat can wool handle when washed? Which fibers can tolerate abrasion or sun exposure better? What about wrinkling or elasticity? With a little bit of fiber history thrown in for good measure. Lots of interesting and useful information!"
