Inspired by Monk's Belt - Woven Rag Rug

Elizabeth

Bobilon Maxi T-Shirt yarn is a recent addition to our store that has been begging to be used! Amy found inspiration with the "Maria" Rag Rug designed by Inga Krook which is found in A Handwoven Treasury. She put her own spin on it and came up with the design we're sharing with you all! This rag rug features a mirrored design on either end, but the monk's belt repeats and color changes are what make this rug visually striking!

Equipment Needed

- 4 shaft loom (Amy used a countermarche loom)
- 10 dent stainless steel reed
- Double boat shuttle & bobbin and 2 or 3 ski shuttles
- Sewing machine for hems

Yarns

Warp: Maysville 8/4 Cotton Rug Warp - Medium Gray - 2 spools

Weft: Bobilon Maxi T-Shirt - 1 of each in Smoky, Mr. Gray, Stone

For the hems: Maysville 8/4 Cotton Rug Warp - Medium Gray

Setts

Warp: 10 epi

Weft: ~ 5 ppi

Dimensions (approximate)

Width in reed: 26.4"

Woven length: ~51.25" including the .75" of the hem on both sides once sewn

Finished size (not washed) : ~24" x 51.25"

Weave Structure

Plain weave & Monk's Belt

Warp

Warp 4 yards using 8/4 rug warp and warp 266 ends (1064 total yards). Instead of using a floating selvedge, Amy doubled the warp ends in the first and last heddles.

Weft

Hems: Weave 2 inches of hem with 8/4 rug warp (the same you use in your warp) in a double boat shuttle for a doubled weft.

Using the rug Amy wove as an example these colors will be represented by letters. Color A = Smokey, Color B = Mr. Gray, Color C = Stone

Get creative with your own color sequences!
