Calcium Carbonate (chalk) is used to adjust the pH of a natural dye bath resulting in deeper and brighter colors. It can also be used as a fixative for mordants such as Aluminum Acetate and Ferrous Sulfate (Iron Powder or Copperas)
Madder Root and Madder Extract often yield deeper reds when calcium carbonate is added to the natural dye bath.
Cutch Extract develops darker russet brown shades with the help of calcium carbonate and soda ash.
Weld Extract produces brighter yellows when calcium carbonate is added.
