Yarns
High Quality Yarn
We carry a large selection of yarn for so many different crafts that we have narrowed them down into some easier to manage categories. Our yarn selection is organized by crafts to make it easier to find what you are looking for. You can choose to use whatever yarn you like for any craft but these are our recommendations for the best yarn to use for each of our different craft disciplines. If you want to look at ALL of the yarns that we carry at one time simply type "yarn" into the search bar at the top of the page.
A Variety of Yarn Types and Blends
Every yarn we carry lists what the material is in the description because we have a wide variety of different fibers available including cotton, wool, linen, hemp, silk, acrylic, Tencel, bamboo, banana, and more. All of our yarns are listed with both the Weaving Size and Knitting size listed in the description so you can easily understand what size the yarn is no matter which sizing system you are familiar with.
Exploring different types of yarn opens a world of possibilities for weavers, knitters, crocheters, and other crafters alike. From luxurious silk to durable wool, each yarn brings unique qualities to your projects. Understanding the fibers used in yarn can help in making informed choices, ensuring that your crafting experience is as enjoyable as possible whether you knit, weave, or crochet.
Plant Based Yarns: Cotton, Linen, Hemp, and More
Cotton yarn is ideal for producing towels, table linens and garments. Cotton absorbs moisture and is cool to the touch thus keeping the body comfortable. However, cotton does shrink (unless it's mercerized, which treats the yarn to have a slight sheen), so consider that when planning projects using cotton. The Woolery offers a wide variety of cotton yarns, including our own Bluegrass Mills 8/2 Cotton Yarn.
Linen yarn is known for its breathable and moisture-wicking properties, making it ideal for warm-weather projects. However, linen can be stiff and prone to wrinkling, which may necessitate special care during washing and maintenance, but it does soften over time. This versatile yarn is perfect for crafting summer garments, elegant tablecloths, and unique home decor items.
Hemp is very similar to linen in that it can be stiff, but softens over time. It is a very strong fiber and does well when making items that require more durability like bags, rugs, and housewares.
Animal Based Yarns: Wool, Alpaca, Silk, and More
Wool is known for its warmth and elasticity and has natural moisture-wicking properties, making it suitable for both cozy sweaters and outdoor accessories. However, some may find it itchy against sensitive skin depending on the breed of the wool. Merino wool is one of the softest breeds of wool and is most commonly used to make wearable items. Other wools are rougher and are better for heavy outerwear or rugs.
Alpaca is softer and warmer than sheep's wool ad has a luxurious feel. It is perfect for delicate items like scarves and hats. One consideration is that it can be less durable than wool, so care should be taken with wear and washing.
Silk adds a beautiful sheen to any project and adds drape, making it ideal for shawls and fine garments.
Fibers like camel, cashmere, and mohair offer unique textures and warmth. Cashmere is incredibly soft and lightweight, suitable for high-end projects, while mohair adds fluffiness and warmth. These yarns often require special care to maintain their quality and you'll find them blended with other fibers like wool or alpaca to add stability.
Are there special yarn collections that are popular among weavers?
Maurice Brassard brand is by far the most popular collection of weaving yarns among weavers. It's considered to be one the biggest workhorse lines of yarn due to its quality and variety of colors that are suitable for most any weaving project you're considering.
