Spinning Wheels

Spinning Wheels — Saxony, Castle, Electric & Portable Wheels for Hand Spinning

A spinning wheel is a hand-powered or electric fiber tool used to twist fiber (wool, cotton, silk, flax, and other natural fibers) into yarn. Spinning wheels are the primary tool of hand spinning, a fiber art in which the spinner drafts fiber and adds twist to produce handspun yarn for knitting, weaving, and other textile crafts. The Woolery carries spinning wheels from leading manufacturers including Ashford, Kromski, Schacht, Louet, Majacraft, and Dreaming Robots.

Choosing a spinning wheel — key factors:

Style and size

Saxony wheels have the largest floor footprint and are best suited to dedicated spinning spaces. Castle and modern wheels are more compact. Folding wheels (Ashford Joy, Kromski Sonata) collapse for transport and storage.

Drive system

  • Single drive — most common; simpler setup; requires more tension adjustment during spinning; recommended for beginners
  • Double drive — drive band wraps both flyer and bobbin; more consistent draw-in; less adjustment needed during spinning

Tension system

  • Scotch tension (flyer-led) — brake on the bobbin; easier to control; most beginner wheels use this system
  • Irish tension (bobbin-led) — brake on the flyer; strong draw-in; can be challenging for new spinners

Portability

If you plan to spin at guilds, retreats, or while traveling, prioritize a folding wheel (Kromski Sonata, Ashford Joy) or an electric spinner (Ashford e-Spinner, Dreaming Robots Electric Eel).

Spinning wheel maintenance:

Spinning wheels require regular oiling of moving parts (wheel axle, treadle hinges, flyer bearings), periodic inspection of drive bands and brake bands for wear, tightening of screws and joints, and removal of fiber and dust buildup. Most manufacturers include maintenance guidance with their wheels.
