Finely ground heartwood of the tree Pterocarpus santalinus, native to tropical Asia.  Red Sandalwood’s natural dye, Santalin, is used as colorant in food, alcoholic beverages, wood polish, metal varnish, textiles, wool, silk, leather, jute, and medicines. 

Imparts red-browns to purplish browns in an alkaline dye bath (use Soda Ash to get a pH of 10 - 11).
