100% Hemp Yarn

Excellent weaving yarn (warp or weft) for dish towels, place mats, tablecloths, clothing etc. Washes easily. Hemp yarn softens upon repeated washings.

Hemp fiber obtained from the bast of the Cannabis sativa plant has been used for some 10,000 years for items such as clothing, rope, paper, sailcloth, everything from clothing  and other household goods.  The use of hemp cord in pottery has been documented in modern day Taiwan dating back to 8,000 B.C.  Hemp belongs to the bast fiber family that also includes flax, jute, ramie, nettle and kenaf.  All bast fibers will be a bit stiff at first, but become progressively softer after only 3-4 washings.

Hemp is environmentally friendly in many ways. Hemp grows well without the need for chemicals which makes it an ideal alternative to cotton.  In addition, hemp has a deep root system that helps to prevent soil erosion and aerates the soil to the benefit of future crops. Hemp is an extremely eco-friendly resource.

Very pleased with this yarn.

"I ordered this to repair some hemp Fanny packs. They are back to functional status and look wonderful. This yarn is very easy to work with. It has excellent strength and has just enough spin irregularities to add personality to whatever it is used for. I am currently crocheting some straps for alpaca earmuffs. So, yes, I am pleased with this yarn."

Workhorse--solid product. Would buy again.

"I really like this yarn and have used it in multiple projects. After washing and, particularly, ironing, it softens and shines beautifully. I mostly use it for weft. I tried it once for warp (dry) and it was a little sticky for beating. Might have been different if I had moistened it, so may try that next. The amount on the spool is truly ample. The color is exactly as pictured. I appreciate having an alternative to cotton."

Investigating hemp

"I purchased two different hemp yarns, and this looks like the nicer of the two. (Both are good!) It is much softer than I was expecting and has a silky sheen. I bought the natural color because I plan on dying it, maybe with the natural dyes that I also purchased."
