This is a ligno-cellulosic fiber obtained from the stem of the banana plant. 

Due to its lightweight and comfortable hand, banana fiber is popular in Japan for use in summer wear as well as traditional kimono and kamishimo garments. 

Due to its relative strength, Banana fiber is used in currency paper, maritime ropes & cables and as a packing material for agricultural goods.

Banana fiber blends easily with cotton and other natural fibers.

  • Country of Origin: Great Britain
  • Similar in appearance to bamboo and ramie fiber.  However, banana fiber is finer and easier to spin than either bamboo or ramie.

  • It has somewhat shiny appearance depending upon the extraction & spinning process.
  • It absorbs as well as releases moisture very fast.

A gift for my wife

"I bought the banana top fiber for my wife as a gift. I wanted to give her something a little different and I had never heard of banana top. She has spun samples singly and blended with cotton. She says it is ""stiff but soft"" ""It washes well"" and ""Is strong"". She machine washed and dried it and her crocheted test square shrunk from a 7 inch square to 6. 5 inches. She wanted to pre shrink it before dyeing to see if it shrinks any further. So far she is very pleased with this product. So, as the saying goes; ""If mama's happy, everyone (me) is happy"""

blending Banana

"It was great to blend in to BFL superwash! So soft and shiny with average staple at 8 inches or more. It was difficult to spin on its own but this may have been due to it being my first time with that long or a staple and a bast fiber. It did make a nice strong string when spun fine on its own. If I get ambitious, I will try again."
