Pima Natural Brown Cotton Sliver

This particular Pima cotton is grown in California and specially processed to make it easier to spin. This special process was developed by Joan Ruane so that hand spinners could more readily enjoy spinning cotton. 

Thought to originate some 5000 years ago in the Americas, naturally colored cotton occurs in red, green and several shades of brown.  Due to the specialized harvest techniques required, naturally colored cotton is relatively rare and more expensive than more common white cotton.

Tannin gives naturally brown cotton its characteristic color.
