Louet S17 Spinning Wheel - Double Treadle

Comes partially assembled, comparable to other Louet classic wheels, the final assembly is quick and easy. The bobbins are also assembled. The wood is sanded and the edges rounded. The wheel only requires a finishing with lacquer, stain or wax. Since the backpost on the new wheel is 32mm thick, the original S17 skeinwinder will not fit the new version, however, the Louet stand alone skeinwinder will solve that problem. A great wheel at a great price!

The first generation Louët spinning wheels, like the S10 and S17, all have a single belt bobbin drive with an adjustable flyer brake to regulate tension. This results in spinning wheels that make learning to spin easy and are also very suitable spinning thicker yarns.

The bobbins have a sheave with three settings that can be used to obtain three spinning speeds or ratios. By using different types of bobbins and flyers, Louet spinning wheels can be used to produce every kind of yarn, from coarse wool to fine silks.  A High Speed Set is also available for this wheel for easier spinning of very fine yarns.

Finally, an excellent spinning wheel must turn freely and quietly. Accordingly, Louet uses maintenance-free ball bearings in the main hub and at the footman connection. (No lubrication is required).

The Louet S17 Spinning Wheel is made of laminated hardwood with a birch exterior surface.

The single treadle Louet S17 Spinning Wheel can be found here.

Love Her!

"I am a beginner and I have found the Louet S17 easy to learn on. The double foot controls make it easy to slow down to a pace I can spin and check my pre-drafting fiber for thick spots. It is easy to stop and start when I need to pick-up new fiber. I finished all the wooden parts with Minwax paste finishing wax before I assembled. A wonderful on-line advisor told me to leave the grooves unfinished. I really have a beautiful spinning wheel to learn on."

Overall a great wheel

"4. 5 stars. My wheel arrived when expected without any issues. The assembly was relatively straightforward, but there were some areas where the instructions didn't quite align with the parts. The assembly video I found online was also for a slightly different version. I ended up with a small extra part that I could not find mentioned in the instructions anywhere. There are 3 long screws in two different sizes, but the instructions tell you to use the longest ones at each point where a long screw is needed, so I'm not sure where the shorter one should have been used. I don't know that it will matter, though. One tip I'd give for assembly - oil rotating parts (except the bearings) as you go, especially the rocker bar. It made an awful squeaking until I took it apart and oiled it. Also, the yarn guides should all be placed on the same side as the opening of the orifice. The image in the instructions shows two up and two down. Now that I am all set up, I'm very happy with the wheel. It's easy to use and works smoothly. Also, the bobbins hold a lot more yarn than those of another wheel I have, so that is a bonus. Finally, the dual treadle allows for better control of the direction of spin than a single treadle does."
