Punch Needle
— Embroidery Supplies, Kits, Patterns & Tools
Punch needle (also known as needle punch or punch needle embroidery) is a textile embroidery technique in which a hollow needle threaded with embroidery floss is repeatedly pushed through a woven foundation cloth from the back side, forming small loops of pile on the front. The resulting looped surface creates textured designs commonly used for wall hangings, framed artwork, decorative pillows, and small accessories.
Punch needle is beginner-friendly, requires no prior embroidery experience, and works up quickly compared to traditional hand embroidery.
Punch needle vs. rug punch — what's the difference?
At The Woolery, we use these terms to distinguish two related but separate techniques: punch needle uses smaller-gauge needles with embroidery floss and produces fine, detailed designs on tightly woven backing. Rug punch uses larger-gauge needles with bulkier yarn and produces thicker pile suited to rugs and wall art. Browse our rug punch collection if you're working with yarn.
What you need to get started with punch needle:
- Punch needle tool — a hollow needle sized for embroidery floss, available in adjustable or fixed-loop-height styles
- Project frame or lap stand — holds the backing fabric taut while you work
- Foundation fabric — weavers cloth or monk's cloth with an even, open weave for the needle to pass through
- Embroidery Floss — cotton, silk, or wool floss in the colors needed for your pattern
