Dating back to the 12th century, extract from the genus Caesalpinia has been used as a deep red to brown dye.  Using a chrome mordant will produce purple shades and alum will produce red shades.  Brazilwood dye has been used for textile dyes, inks, paints, varnish tints, and wood stains.  This is the tree that gave Brazil its name from the Portuguese.

Our extract is produced from the Caesalpinia sappan which is abundant in east Asia.
