A One Skein Wonder
Posted by Elizabeth and Amy on Aug 2nd 2022
Sometimes it’s easy to envision what something will turn out to be, but other times you have no idea until you have a few picks woven! This was the case for the scarf Amy wove with Gusto Carmen yarn. We already knew that this half solid, half speckled yarn created a self striping effect when knitted. However, using only one skein (half for the warp and other half for the weft) proved to be a “one skein wonder” project!
- A loom with at least 6” weaving width (we used a Kromski Harp Forte Rigid Heddle)
- 12 Dent Rigid Heddle
- 1 Skein of Gusto Carmen yarn (we used color 1405)
- Paper for warp separation
- Fringe Twister (optional)
Pattern: Plain Weave
We created a 100” long warp with 81 ends that was 6.75" wide using half of our skein. You don’t need to do anything special to create the checked motif, just warp as you normally would and the yarn will do all the work!
Since you are limited to one skein in this project, you might want to lash on your warp instead of tying it on. This technique helps to use as much of the yarn as possible. We do have a YouTube video tutorial on how to lash on your warp to walk you through this process!
Using the other half of the skein, we wove our scarf at 12 ppi until the woven length measured 76" off tension. It is worth noting that with self striping yarn you need to keep your color sequencing in order in your weft. We have a full YouTube Video how how to do this here:
We left about 6” of warp unwoven on both ends to create fringe. Our fringe was made by twisting bundles of 2 working ends together in each clip of our fringe twister, then letting them twist together to create twisted bundles of 4 total working ends. If you’ve never used a tool to twist fringe, check out this helpful video:
As always we’d love to see what you can do with only one skein of this yarn in the 9 other colors. Share your one skein wonders with us on Facebook or Instagram and be sure to tag us!
**If you’d like a longer scarf or a wider scarf please purchase two skeins.**
