Daniel Kromski had been contemplating a folding wheel for several years and began in 2006 to put turning knife to wood. The final result is a fusion of the needs of a modern folding wheel and the traditional look of Kromski wheels. The Sonata is a folding wheel, but much more. The wheel diameter is 19" and ratios are 6.7, 12.5 and 14 to 1. The flyer is single drive and uses an elastic drive band which simplifies changing speeds. The bobbins are the same design used on other Kromski wheels which means you can move from wheel to wheel with no problem.
The Sonata folds and sets-up easily and quickly.
Your Sonata also ships with a padded carry bag that the Kromskis have made in Poland. It is padded on all sides with extra heavy padding on base to support the folded wheel. Large outside pocket for spinning supplies with additional pockets inside. Green and silver canvas (see picture below).

The Kromski PRELUDE - Freebies with purchase (see below)
A very popular wheel, the Prelude is great for beginners - and it has enough features and character to be a lifetime wheel (or perhaps a second Kromski wheel for others). It has the look of an antique wheel and the high degree of wood turning that the Kromskis are famous for, but it also has all the touches modern spinners expect. And for such a quality wheel, the reasonable price is great.
The Kromski Prelude is a single drive wheel; a first for the Kromskis. The good news is that it uses the same bobbins as all the other Kromski wheels. This means that, as you consider adding a second or third Kromski wheel, you know your bobbins will work with all the different models!
The Prelude is easy to treadle, easy to transport, and has an 18" diameter wheel (same as the Kromski Minstrel) for excellent ratios. If you like, you can swivel the mother-of-all in line with the bench for a more compact "package" when moving the wheel or for storage.
The Prelude is made of European alder and birch and with its antique look makes the perfect wheel for reenactors. Additional specifications:
- wheel diameter - 18"
- orifice height - 26"; size - 3/8"
- bobbin size - full 4 oz.; 3 included
- also includes threading hook, attached Lazy Kate, DVD and bottle of spinning wheel oil
- Ratios: 6, 10.5, and 13 to 1
- sleeve bearings on wheel shaft, bobbins; leather bearings on flyer
- weight - 9 lbs.
- original hemp drive band plus elastic drive band.

The Kromski POLONAISE - Freebies with purchase (see below) |
|
|
|
|
This wheel has the look of wheels from the Baltic area of Poland and Scandinavia. In fact, a well known spinning wheel historian has said that the manner in which this wheel is built is as close to being historically correct as he has seen. This will be a plus for spinners wanting the "real thing" and for the growing community of reenactors. The amount of decorative turning on this wheel is substantial, making it a sight to behold.
The Polonaise features functional wood threaded wheel angle adjustments so the proper angle can be obtained with the flyer. Pin and socket bearings support the wheel, offering low friction and exceptional ease of treadling. All of the wheel hardware sits between the wheel posts and the footman passes through the bench to the treadle.
The Polonaise is made with European alder and birch and comes standard with double drive and scotch tensioning. The bobbins will hold a full 4 oz. package of yarn and they fit on all the other Kromski wheels if you start a collection. With its antique look, the Polonaise makes the perfect wheel for reenactors. Additional specifications:
- wheel diameter - 24"
- orifice height - 25"; size - 3/8"
- bobbin size - full 4oz.; 3 included -
- also includes threading hook, tensioned Kate, bottle of spinning wheel oil and New Voyager 143-minute DVD about Kromski products, wheel and loom assembly, and introduction to spinning and weaving.

- bearings on bobbins and treadle; leather bearings on flyer

Kromski Drive bands
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Note about stretch drive bands - with double drive wheels the drive band does two important things: it drives the flyer and it must slip properly on the bobbin pulley to permit take-up of yarn on the bobbin. We have found that the stretch drive band material we offer allows these two things to happen (with some types of stretch bands this does not happen). You may also use this drive band as a single loop only for spinning with scotch tension.

Kromski Tensioned Lazy Kates
You can choose from two styles of lazy kates (see above). The arched version comes standard with all Mazurka and Symphony wheels; the upright Kate comes standard with the Polonaise. Prices DO NOT include bobbins.

They hold Kromski bobbins, of course, but also Ashford (standard bobbins), Jensen, Reeves, Timbertops, Roberta (regular), Majacraft and Lendrum (regular and very fast bobbins). |
