Natural Dyes

NATURAL DYE EXTRACT KIT: includes the following extracts: 12g. of cochineal, 38g. cutch, 35g. grey logwood, 39g. madder, 2 oz. osage orange; plus 1 pair of gloves, mask, 1 lb. of alum, 1/3 lb. alum acetate, 4 oz. scouring agent, 58g. soda ash, 28g. iron and a 21-page booklet. Kit will dye approximately 19 lbs. of fiber to medium shades.

PROCION MX REACTIVE DYES: work best on cellulosic fibers (cotton, rayon, linen, ramie, jute): lightfast, wash-fast, boil-fast. Require washing soda and common salt. Colors: Yellow, Fuschia, Red, Blue, Turquoise, Rusty Brown, Black and Forest Green. 1 tbsp. per lb. of fiber. Good companion books for these dyes are "Surface Design with Procion Dyes" and "Color by Accident".

Mordants

ALUM MORDANT (Potassium aluminum sulphate): use 3 to 4 ozs. per lb. of wool or silk; safe to use.

D-1000 - $7.50/lb.

 

TIN MORDANT (Stannous chloride): brightens colors; handle with care. 1/4 oz. per lb.
EAR-1001 - $8.95 for 2 oz.
 

COPPER MORDANT (Cupric sulphate pentahydrate): gives greenish tint; handle with care; l/2 oz. per lb.

EAR-1002 - $4 for 4 oz.

 

IRON MORDANT (Ferrous sulphate heptahydrate): darkens colors; handle with care. 1/2 oz. per lb.

EAR-1003 - $2.50 for 4 oz.

 

TARTARIC ACID: use w/mordants to help prevent streaks; 1 oz. per lb.

SPECTRALITE (Thio-urea dioxide): substitute for hydrosulfite in indigo vatting; use about 1/6 the amount or 1/3 oz. per lb. of fiber.
