Pashmina - the Little Christmas Goat

Author: Angela Kehlenbeck

Christmas is coming, but all Simon has are beans and potatoes for his family's feast. When he stumbles upon a goat in the mountains, he's delighted to have found a perfect Christmas roast. But the children are horrified! They can't eat the little animal—she is too beautiful. They convince their parents to spare her, and they name her Pashmina.

Soon their kindness pays off. Pashlmina's hair grows in so quickly that they have to keep shaving her, and spin her wool into beautiful yarn for making socks and clothes. When they sell her mohair at the market, they earn enough money to support the family through the rest of the winter. From then on Simon tells the story of the little goat who escaped the cooking pot "by a hair..."

A poignant story of sacrifice, perfect for Christmas.
